KEEPING A SPIRITUAL JOURNAL

Have you ever experimented with keeping a journal? A spiritual journal is a journal that helps you focus on your personal relationship with God. There are no rules when it comes to keeping one. You can just enjoy experimenting with what helps you.

There are a couple of things that a spiritual journal isn't. Some Christians have notebooks for notes they make from Bible studies and sermons. That can be another thing to experiment with if you feel it might be helpful to you. A spiritual journal is a bit different though. It's not so much for studying and learning as it is for helping you notice what's going on in your own life and helping you notice what God's doing in your life.

A spiritual journal isn't a diary either. It's not somewhere you have to write down an account of each day (unless you want to!) or an account 'what happened' each prayer time. It's not something you have to write in each day. There's no pressure with it at all.

So how might you use a spiritual journal? Here are just a few ideas but you will probably be able to think of some of your own too:

As and when you feel God saying something to you that you don't want to forget, you might write it in your journal. You might find yourself just writing an occasional sentence or phrase in it a couple of times a week.

If you come across a Bible verse or a phrase from a Christian song or hymn or a prayer that really speaks to you, you might copy it into your journal so that you can come back to it.

You might from time to time, say once a week or once a month, do a kind of little review of your life (there are separate posts on this). A journal can come in handy in jotting down what you feel God has been saying to you and doing in you over the past month or so, and what things you feel God is encouraging you to grow in.

Sometimes 'free writing' can be really helpful spiritually. In 'free writing' you literally just write whatever comes from the top of your head and from your heart for five or ten minutes. This helps you to see what is most on your mind and heart at the moment. It might help you to see what God is doing in you at the moment, what your deepest concerns and desires are, and what you most need to pray about at the moment.

These are just a few ideas for  you to experiment with. Some of the most famous and influential Christians over the centuries kept spiritual journals and you can buy copies of some of them. At the heart of keeping a spiritual journal is an attitude of listening to God, noticing what God is doing in your life, and cooperating with God. Writing in one should never feel like a chore. A spiritual journal is notes made during an exciting adventure, jottings and memories of a love story and a growing relationship between God and you.
